Moment of a force

Keyword Definition
Couple A pair of forces equal in magnitude, opposite in direction, and parallel but not collinear, causing rotation without translation.
Equilibrium The state in which the sum of clockwise moments is equal to the sum of counterclockwise moments around a point.
Lever Arm The perpendicular distance between the line of action of the force and the axis of rotation.
Moment Arm Same as lever arm, the distance from the axis of rotation to the line of action of a force.
Moment Center The point about which moments are calculated, often chosen for convenience.
Moment Of A Force The product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to a reference point.
Torque A measure of the rotational effect of the force, calculated as the moment of force multiplied by the length of the lever arm.
