Data Compression

Keyword Definition
Aliasing Jagged or stair-stepped appearance of diagonal lines in compressed images
Bitrate The number of bits that are processed or transmitted per unit of time, typically measured in bits per second (bps)
Blockiness Visible grid-like patterns that result from dividing images into blocks for compression
Color Bleeding Blurring of colors or bleeding of colors outside their boundaries in a compressed image
Compression The process of reducing the size of data by encoding it in a more efficient representation.
Data Facts or information that is represented in a form suitable for processing.
Entropy Coding A data compression technique that assigns shorter codes to symbols that occur most frequently in a data stream.
GIF A lossy compression format used to compress animated images.
Image Compression Reducing the file size of an image while preserving its quality and visual information.
Image Compression Artifacts Unintended visual distortions or anomalies that occur in compressed images
JPEG A widely employed standard for compressing images which uses lossy compression techniques to decrease file sizes.
Lossless Compression Reducing the size of data without any loss of information.
Lossy Compression Reducing the size of a file by sacrificing a portion of its data, leading to a smaller size yet reduced quality.
Noise Random variations or distortions introduced in an image during compression
PNG A file format employing lossless compression to store images, often utilized for web graphics and images that have transparent backgrounds.
Posterization Reduction of smooth gradients in an image to distinct bands of color due to compression
Ring Artifacts Circular or ring-shaped distortions that occur around edges in compressed images
